The Cricket World Cup Trophy (pictured in 2023) represents the pinnacle of success in the sport. The first World Cup was held in England in June 1975, just four years after the first ODI cricket match was played. Interestingly, a separate Women’s Cricket World Cup had been organized two years prior to the men’s tournament, and international cricket tournaments date back to as early as 1912, with a triangular series involving Australia, England, and South Africa.

The first three editions of the Cricket World Cup were held in England. However, starting with the 1987 tournament, hosting duties have been shared between countries under an unofficial rotation system. To date, fourteen ICC members have hosted at least one match in the tournament.

The current format includes a qualification phase over the three years preceding the tournament to determine which teams advance to the tournament phase. During the tournament, 10 teams, including the host nation, compete over about a month at venues within the host country. The format will change in the 2027 edition to accommodate an expanded 14-team final competition.

A total of twenty teams have participated in the 13 editions of the Cricket World Cup. Australia has been the most successful team, winning the tournament six times. India and the West Indies have won it twice each, while Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England have each won it once. The best performance by a non-full-member team came when Kenya reached the semi-finals in 2003.

Australia are the current champions, having won the 2023 World Cup in India. The 2027 World Cup will be held jointly in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

T20 World cup: ICC Cricket

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (formerly the ICC World Twenty20) is a biennial Twenty20 International cricket tournament organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Since its inauguration in 2007, the event has been held every two years, with the exceptions of 2011, 2018, and 2020. The tournament was rebranded from ICC World Twenty20 to ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in November 2018.

2011 world cup: ICC cricket World Cup

The 2011 edition of the tournament was preponed to 2010 due to the scheduling of the ICC Champions Trophy 2010. This change was necessitated by a scheduling bottleneck after the Champions Trophy 2008, initially set to be hosted by Pakistan, was delayed and eventually moved to South Africa in 2009 due to security concerns.

In May 2016, the ICC proposed holding a tournament in 2018, with South Africa as a potential host. However, this idea was later abandoned as the top member nations were preoccupied with bilateral commitments in 2018.

The 2020 edition of the tournament was initially scheduled to take place but was postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The intended host, India, had to relinquish hosting duties, and the tournament was relocated to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman. The 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup took place five years after the previous iteration in 2016.

As of 2024, nine editions of the T20 World Cup have been played, with a total of 24 teams competing. Six national teams have won the title. The West Indies (2012, 2016), England (2010, 2022), and India (2007, 2024) have each won the competition twice, while Pakistan (2009), Sri Lanka (2014), and Australia (2021) have won it once.

India are the current champions, having won the 2024 tournament for the second time by defeating South Africa in the final.
