Mr. IPL Suresh Raina ( born 27 November 1986) is an Indian former international cricketer. He was known for being an aggressive left-handed middle-order batsman and an occasional off-spin bowler. Raina made history as the first Indian batsman to score a century in all three formats of international cricket, and he also became the first Indian to score a century in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, achieving this feat with 101 runs against South Africa during the 2010 Tournament.

Raina played domestic cricket for Uttar Pradesh (UP) and was the second-youngest player ever to captain India. He occasionally served as the stand-in captain for the Indian men’s national cricket team and also for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL during the absence of the main captain, MS Dhoni. Additionally, he captained Gujarat Lions in the IPL and served as vice-captain for Chennai Super Kings.

During his international career, Raina was part of the Indian team that won the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. On 15 August 2020, he announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket. Later, on 6 September 2022, Raina retired from all forms of cricket, including the IPL and domestic cricket. He had pulled out of the 2020 Indian Premier League for personal reasons.

Suresh Raina was awarded “Best Fielder” by the BCCI ahead of the finals of IPL 2010. He played a vital half-century in the final, which turned the match in Chennai Super Kings’ favor, ultimately leading them to victory over the Mumbai Indians. For his exceptional performances in 2010, Raina was named in the ESPNcricinfo IPL XI.

On 30 May 2014, Raina made a remarkable 87 runs off just 25 balls against Kings XI Punjab in Qualifier 2. He narrowly missed scoring the fastest century in cricket history by just 13 runs due to a runout. His outstanding performances in 2014 earned him spots in both the ESPNcricinfo IPL XI and ESPNcricinfo CLT20 XI.

In 2016, after Chennai Super Kings’ suspension, Raina was signed by Gujarat Lions and captained the team for the season. He remained consistent with the bat, scoring 399 runs in 15 innings. During the season, Raina had to leave for the Netherlands for the birth of his first child, marking the first time he missed an IPL match in nine seasons.

On the occasion of the 10-year anniversary of the IPL, Raina was named in the all-time ESPNcricinfo IPL XI. He was also named in the Cricbuzz IPL XI of the tournament for 2017.

In IPL 2018, Raina was retained by the returning Chennai Super Kings for a price of ₹11 crore ($1.7 million). However, during the second game of the tournament, he suffered a calf injury, which ruled him out of the next two games.

On 23 March 2019, in the first match of the 12th edition of the tournament against RCB, Raina became the first batsman to score 5000 runs in the IPL.

In 2020, Raina flew to the UAE with the Super Kings squad for the IPL, which was held there due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he returned to India and withdrew from the season citing personal reasons.

In 2021, Raina reached a significant milestone by becoming the fourth player in IPL history to play 200 matches, following MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Dinesh Karthik.

In the 2022 IPL Auctions, Raina went unsold, after which he transitioned to a commentator role for the tournament.

Other Franchise Cricket

In September 2022, Raina signed a contract with the Road Safety World Series league and played for the ‘Indian Legends’ team.

In 2023, he was selected as the captain of Urbanrisers Hyderabad in the Legends League Cricket, leading the team to the finals.
